Seen some content regarding Vitamin D3 in its form of cholecalciferol, labeling the supplement as useless and as a rat poison. Wanted to clear it up for anyone who has also seen this content, considering the fact cholecalciferol supplementation is exceedingly useful for childhood development and for those who live in low sunlight environments.
1. "Cholecalciferol is used as rat poison"
Cholecalciferol is never used in isolation as a rat poison, it always needs an additional component to add a sufficient lethality rate. When cholecalciferol is used in poisons it is on average 45mg per kg of bodyweight (i.e. measurement for rat poison), 45mg of cholecalciferol is 1,800,000 IUs, humans require 50,000-100,000, and most supplements are at 10,000 IUs. This is a clear example of the dose making the poison; also not to mention the fact even when done at 45mg per kg of bodyweight the lethality rate is only 50%.
2. What is cholecalciferol?
Being against cholecalciferol to begin with is nonsensical. It's quite literally just the pre-converted form of Vitamin D3 which you get from the sun, there is no difference in chemical structure the cholecalciferol from the sun than that of a vitamin supplement form. You constantly have cholecalciferol being converted to calciferol in your body at all times. The source of cholecalciferol in supplements is most often sheep wool oil, making it an animal product, not a synthetic lab product.
3. Do we even properly absorb the supplement form?
Yes, to a great degree. I brought my Vitamin D blood levels to 150 ng/ml+ using 50,000 IUs daily of cholecalciferol supplementation. I reccomend taking it in the middle of a fatty meal (greater than 10g of fat in the meal ideally)
