# Ear Protrusion Angle

Harmony · Front view · Ears · https://www.faceiqlabs.com/support/harmony/ear-protrusion-angle

A front-photo angle between the outer ear and a vertical reference through each cheek.

## What is measured

Calculation: Mean angle of outer-ear-to-cheek/mouth-level reference against vertical

## Why it matters

This gives a second description of the ear’s contribution to the face outline. Unlike the width percentage, its angle depends on the vertical position of the ear and mouth reference too.

- Lower: the ear direction lies closer to the vertical reference.
- Higher: the ear direction tilts farther away from that reference.

## Where the idea comes from

Evidence: FaceIQ adaptation. This is a FaceIQ landmark-based description of facial shape. The linked research provides background on facial measurement or perception; it has not directly validated this exact formula or its score.

## A worked example

If the two constructed ear angles are 10° and 14°, the result is their mean, 12°.

Example values explain the calculation. They are not a target range.

## How to read your result

This frontal proxy is not the clinical angle between the ear and skull measured from above or behind.

## Research & further reading

These sources explain the history or related evidence. FaceIQ’s score weights and reference ranges are model settings; the papers do not collectively validate the scoring system.

- Farkas et al. (2005). [International anthropometric study of facial morphology in various ethnic groups/races](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/16077306/). Documents variation in facial dimensions across sampled populations. Descriptive measurements explain variation; they do not establish an attractiveness score.
