# Ear Protrusion Ratio

Harmony · Front view · Ears · https://www.faceiqlabs.com/support/harmony/ear-protrusion-ratio

The average horizontal extension of the ears beyond the cheek landmarks, relative to face width.

## What is measured

Calculation: Mean absolute ear-to-cheek horizontal gap ÷ cheekbone width × 100

## Why it matters

This describes how much the ears contribute to the front-view silhouette. It compares their lateral extent with the face width, not with the width of the ears themselves.

- Lower: a smaller average horizontal ear-to-cheek gap.
- Higher: a larger average horizontal ear-to-cheek gap.

## Where the idea comes from

Evidence: FaceIQ adaptation. This is a FaceIQ landmark-based description of facial shape. The linked research provides background on facial measurement or perception; it has not directly validated this exact formula or its score.

## A worked example

A 14-unit average gap relative to a 140-unit face width gives 10%.

Example values explain the calculation. They are not a target range.

## How to read your result

The calculation uses absolute distances. Hair coverage, head rotation or an ear landmark inside the cheek outline can make it misleading.

## Research & further reading

These sources explain the history or related evidence. FaceIQ’s score weights and reference ranges are model settings; the papers do not collectively validate the scoring system.

- Farkas et al. (2005). [International anthropometric study of facial morphology in various ethnic groups/races](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/16077306/). Documents variation in facial dimensions across sampled populations. Descriptive measurements explain variation; they do not establish an attractiveness score.
