# Submental Cervical Angle

Harmony · Side view · Neck · https://www.faceiqlabs.com/support/harmony/submental-cervical-angle

The angle where the under-chin contour meets the front of the neck.

## What is measured

Calculation: Angle: menton → cervical point → neck point

Nasion means the nasal root, subnasale the nose base, and pogonion the most forward chin point. Frankfort refers to the direction from the ear-opening landmark to the lower orbital landmark.

## Why it matters

It describes the change in direction from the chin underside to the neck. Posture, soft-tissue contour and chin position all affect the visible junction.

- Lower: a more closed chin–neck junction.
- Higher: a more open transition into the neck.

## Where the idea comes from

Evidence: Clinical reference. This contour is used in clinical profile assessment. Naini and colleagues studied how groups rated silhouettes with different submental-cervical angles; those ratings do not establish a treatment need for an individual.

## A worked example

A 100° junction is geometrically more closed than a 125° junction. Lifting the chin can change the photographed contour.

Example values explain the calculation. They are not a target range.

## How to read your result

Use a natural head position. An angle cannot identify whether the contour comes from posture, skin, fat, muscle or skeletal structure.

## Research & further reading

These sources explain the history or related evidence. FaceIQ’s score weights and reference ranges are model settings; the papers do not collectively validate the scoring system.

- Naini et al. (2016). [Submental-Cervical Angle: Perceived Attractiveness and Threshold Values of Desire for Surgery](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/27833339/). Patients, laypeople and clinicians rated altered profile silhouettes. Ratings changed with the neck angle and differed between groups; a silhouette experiment cannot determine an individual treatment need.
