Face rating: how attractive is your face, out of 10?
What an AI face rating measures, how your score is worked out, and why rating apps disagree.
An honest face rating measures what can be measured (proportion, bone definition, dimorphism and skin) and tells you exactly why you scored what you did. Here is how an AI face rating works and how to read your number.
What a face rating actually measures
Attractiveness is not a single trait. Decades of research point to a handful of things people respond to consistently: balanced proportions, a clearly defined bone structure, features that read as typical of your sex, clear skin and a reasonably symmetrical face. Those are measurable. Expression, style, voice and personality matter just as much in real life, but no photo-based rating can see them.
A useful face rating therefore does two things: it measures the structural part precisely, and it shows you the individual measurements so you can see where your score came from. A single unexplained number is a party trick; a breakdown is something you can act on.
How FaceIQ Labs rates a face
You upload two photos: a straight-on front photo and a side profile. Roughly 60% of the harmony points come from the front and 40% from the side, which is why a front photo alone gives an incomplete picture.
- 1
Landmarks
The AI places dozens of anatomical points: pupils, the corners of the eyes, nose tip, jaw angles, chin, hairline and more. You can review and correct every one before the analysis is created. - 2
Measurements
From those points it takes 70 measurements, 37 from the front and 33 from the side, and compares each with an ideal range from published aesthetic research, adjusted for your gender and ethnicity. See them all in Facial analysis. - 3
Four pillars
The measurements become your Harmony score (proportion). Three more pillars are scored alongside it: Angularity (jaw, chin, cheekbones and under-chin), Dimorphism (how masculine or feminine ten regions read) and Features (around thirty quality checks covering skin, eyes, hair, brows and symmetry). - 4
One overall rating
The pillars are combined with a power mean that behaves close to a geometric mean, so your weakest pillar weighs the most. Four 7s give a 7.0; three 8s and a 4 give about 6.7, not 7.0.
That last rule mirrors how people perceive faces: one conspicuous weakness is noticed more than several modest strengths. It also means the fastest way to raise an overall rating is to fix the weakest pillar, not to polish the strongest.
What your score out of 10 means
Every score uses the same 0–10 scale, from a single ratio up to your overall rating. 5 is the population average and the scale is curved: moving from 5 to 6 is common, moving from 7 to 8 is rare. A 7 is about 1 in 18 people, an 8 about 1 in 250. The full table of labels and rarities is in Understanding your scores, and the celebrity harmony rankings show where well-known faces land.
Why face rating apps give different scores
If you have tried a few “rate my face” apps, you have probably seen your score jump around. There are two reasons.
The model
Many apps pass one photo through a neural network trained to imitate crowd ratings. It returns a number without reasons, and because it reacts to everything in the image (lighting, makeup, camera angle, background) the same face can score very differently from one photo to the next. A measurement-based rating only changes when the measured geometry changes, and it shows you every measurement behind the result.
The photo
This affects every method. A phone held at arm's length uses a wide lens close to the face, which enlarges the nose, lengthens the face and pushes the eyes apart. Shooting from above shrinks the jaw; from below it enlarges it. Overhead light carves shadows that read as cheekbones that are not there. None of that is your face, and all of it gets measured.
How to get an accurate face rating
- Stand about two metres away and use the back camera at 2× zoom. Distance is what removes lens distortion.
- Keep the camera at eye level and your head level, with no tilt or turn.
- Face soft, even light, such as a window. Avoid overhead lights and direct sun.
- Neutral expression, lips closed, hair off the face, glasses off, and no filters or portrait mode.
- For the side profile, turn a true 90° and look straight ahead, not at the phone.

What to do with your rating
Start with your flaws list, which is ranked by how many points each one costs you, and with your weakest pillar. Some flaws are structural and expensive to change; many are not. Body fat changes Angularity, skin and grooming change Features, and hair, brows and facial hair change Dimorphism. How to improve your face goes through the options from easiest to hardest.
