Why it matters
Eye spacing is perceived within the surrounding face. Identical pupil spacing occupies a larger share of a narrow face than a wide face, so the denominator changes the visual relationship.
- Lower: pupils occupy a smaller share of face width.
- Higher: pupils occupy a larger share of face width.
Where the idea comes from
Classical proportion
Eye spacing has a long history in proportion analysis. Pallett and colleagues tested interocular spacing relative to face width in controlled images; that study is relevant context, with limits from its stimuli and participants. [1]
A worked example
64 units between pupils in a face 140 units wide gives 45.7%. The same spacing in a 150-unit-wide face gives 42.7%.
