In these guides, nasion means the nasal root, subnasale the nose base, and pogonion the most forward chin point. Frankfort refers to the direction from the ear-opening landmark to the lower orbital landmark.

Why it matters

It describes the change in direction from the chin underside to the neck. Posture, soft-tissue contour and chin position all affect the visible junction.

  • Lower: a more closed chin–neck junction.
  • Higher: a more open transition into the neck.

Where the idea comes from

Clinical reference

This contour is used in clinical profile assessment. Naini and colleagues studied how groups rated silhouettes with different submental-cervical angles; those ratings do not establish a treatment need for an individual. [1]

A worked example

A 100° junction is geometrically more closed than a 125° junction. Lifting the chin can change the photographed contour.

    Patients, laypeople and clinicians rated altered profile silhouettes. Ratings changed with the neck angle and differed between groups; a silhouette experiment cannot determine an individual treatment need.
