Interior Midface Projection Angle
The direction from the nasal-wing base to the lateral eyelid endpoint, measured against horizontal.
What is measured
The calculation
arctan(vertical eyelid-to-subalare separation ÷ absolute horizontal separation)
Side view / Measurement guide
Follow the measurement
Dots mark the landmarks. Lines show how the measurement is taken.
In these guides, nasion means the nasal root, subnasale the nose base, and pogonion the most forward chin point. Frankfort refers to the direction from the ear-opening landmark to the lower orbital landmark.
Why it matters
This compares the height and horizontal separation of two midface landmarks. It describes their relative geometry rather than the projection of a single bone.
- Lower: the connecting direction is more horizontal.
- Higher: it is more vertical, for the same image orientation.
Where the idea comes from
FaceIQ adaptation
This is a FaceIQ photographic construction. Clinical profile analysis provides context, but the cited work does not validate this exact landmark formula or its scoring range. [1]
A worked example
A 30-unit vertical separation and 40-unit horizontal separation give arctan(30 ÷ 40) ≈ 36.9°.
Example values explain the calculation. They are not a target range and are not measurements of the schematic above.
