In these guides, nasion means the nasal root, subnasale the nose base, and pogonion the most forward chin point. Frankfort refers to the direction from the ear-opening landmark to the lower orbital landmark.
Why it matters
It describes the tilt of the underside without using the upper lip as an angle arm. This separates some of the lip influence found in the nasolabial angle.
- Negative in the app: the columella landmark lies below the nose base.
- Positive in the app: the columella lies above the nose base, with magnitude set by the reference angle.

Nose rotation has been studied with reference directions intended to reduce lip-position effects. FaceIQ compares the nose-base-to-columella segment with the Frankfort direction. [1]
A worked example
An underside direction 15° above a level Frankfort reference gives approximately +15° in the oriented profile.
